My history thesis examined who General Gordon was and what made him stage a courageous if some would say foolish last stand against the Mahdis army of followers at Khartoum. I can say from my research that he was brave, strong, courageous, principled, and a Christian religious zealot. He was a faithful man and I would go so far as to say a mystic. He believed that God had a plan for him to save Khartoum and make him (General Gordon) emerge as the glorious victor against the armies of black indiginous people commanded by the Mahdi. Unfortunately, he was made a martyr by the Mahdis followers when he was killed and had his head cut off. General Gordons Khartoum Diary by Charles George Gordon
